what is the meaning of this sentence ( as crazy as a loom ) and what is the exact meaning of (loom)

I think it is spelled wrongly, or possibly a 'play on words'. The normal phrase is 'crazy as a loon'. A loon is a type of water bird. We don't have them here, so I'm not sure on _why_ people think that a loon is crazy, but that is the phrase.
