What's the difference between 소식 and 뉴스?

소식 is hanja(Chinese character)-based word meaning "news". 뉴스 is a Korean spelling of "news", having the same meaning. 소식 is traditional and general, while 뉴스 is more modern sounding and heavily used by the media.
