What does "check in" here mean?
Someone is on the phone leaving a message - "just checking in seeing how you are doing...". What does "check in" here mean exactly?

"Making sure everything is ok." It's usually said with an element of gentle concern, for example if the person is a little depressed:
"Well you seemed to be in a bad mood, so I just checked in to make sure it's not too serious."
