What is the difference between "io amo" and "voglio bene"?
I am confused as to when it is appropriate, or best, to use "io amo" versus "voglio bene" when saying, "I love...." something.
If I say "I love my dog", which is appropriate? Or if I say, "I love that movie", or "I love my boyfriend"?

Usually they mean the same thing. If you look more deeply,
'ti voglio bene' literally means I want you to stay well, that is even disregarding
the passion that drives my feelings; so (always in a literal sense) it is a kind of 'ti amo' without the selfish part.
Among parents and sons the form 'ti voglio bene' is the usual one, maybe the only one.
(see at: http://www.italki.com/question/78104)
/ti voglio bene/, cioe` /voglio il tuo bene/ a volte puo` essere di maggiore intensita` di /ti amo/, in quanto in /ti amo/ c'e` un desiderio di possesso che in /ti voglio bene/ e` tenuto in silenzio.

To my understanding "I'm not a native speaker":
(Ti amo) is more like 'I love you' while (ti voglio bene) is more like 'I like you'.

Ti voglio bene = I care for you volere bene a qualcuno = to care for someone
Ti amo = I love you amare qualcuno = to love someone
You use ti voglio bene only with people meaning that you care for them. In the other cases you would use the verb amare with few exceptions..
I love my dog = Amo il mio cane/Adoro il mio cane ( you don't say voglio bene to my dog)
With the movie, you wouldn't use either one. You would say: adoro quel film, in English it is I love that movie (exact translation)
If you say to your boyfriend: I love you, it means: ti amo.
If you say to your boyfriend; ti voglio bene, it means I care for you, it can potentially become a ti amo :)

Vorrei continuare la risposta, anche perche` vedo
scetticismo sul fatto che /volere bene/
non sia A VOLTE dello stesso significato, o anche piu` profondo
di /ti amo/.
C'e` una canzone di Lucio Dalla, che si chiama 'Caruso' e che e`
una delle piu` belle canzoni della musica italiana;
dint' e' vene sai (nelle mie vene, e` cosi`)
Chiunque ascolti queste parole non dubita che si tratta di
amore romantico o passionale fra uomo e donna.

amore is used for boy that love a girl, it's a very big and hot passion.
voler bene means affection, attachment, without passion.
the trend is using love like you use to do in USA.
so we use LIKE for something, love for someone,
someone talk about his pets like they are humans, so he uses "love".
amore materno is a big branch, it's mother love, without hot sex passion, but it's stronger that "voler bene".
summarize: amare can have rate of 10/10, amore materno 9/10, voler bene have 8/10, friendship have 7/10, workmates 5/10 ....
