When to use "im" vs "in dem"
Can someone explain the difference between "im" and "in dem" when should I use each? I know that one is just a shorter form of the other, but when are each of them used?

In general, you always use "im". Only when "dem" is emphasized for some reason, you  split it up again:

"In DEM Fall ..." (long "dem") = in THIS case ...

Häufig verwendet man  auch "in dem", wenn ein Nebensatz folgt, der das Objekt näher beschreibt. Zum Beispiel. "Ich wohne in dem Haus, das mir gehört." oder "Das Kleid hängt in dem Schrank, der dort drüben steht."
