I already know the meaning of “敢作敢当," but I want to know if its connotation, because I want to get a tattoo of ”敢作敢当“. I already know it is more of a "manlier" chengyu. I am a woman, but I don't think that a manlier chengyu is a big problem. Are there other meanings or connotations of the chengyu? Would it be inappropriate as a tattoo? Are there other chengyu with a similar meaning without the connotation?More clarification on the a chengyu synonym: Basically, I like the idea that someone should have the responsibility to take action, but also the responsibility to own that action.

It would be very bad taste, because as Zexi has pointed out, it would make you look like a gangster, (or a drug dealer or the manager of a brothel). All the others concentrated on the dictionary definitions but did not register in their brains that you were talking about a tattoo and not a school essay. Tattoos are so rare in China, and word tattoos on women such a taboo, that they didn't know how to deal with your question and just thought it was a dictionary enquiry. What you are after is sociological and style advice.

no, in Chinese, 敢作敢当 this chengyu is totally positive meaning, it praise someone dare risk, and own the courage to be responsible for their actions, there aren't other negative meaning.

Well, for me, it's a little weird to use that as a tattoo. It's totally a manly chengyu.
