What's the meaning of "avenging boredom" in the sentence below?
In vain they rush frantically round from place to place, trying to escape from avenging boredom by mere clatter and motion.
This is very literary and expressive language. It seems that it is very hard for these people to avoid boredom, which is characterised as a thing which seeks to exact vengeance on them (punish them heavily), though the extract does not tell us why.
