What are some good tips for learning Japanese on your own? I want to start learning the basic's of Japanese but I don't know where to start, don't know many tips to help me and I also cannot afford a tutor and proper lessons. Does anyone have any advice?

Learn to read hiragana and katakana. Then You need grammars book, proper vocabularies, and learn Kanji seriously! If you're an English speaker, then you need extra work to practice speaking the language. Good luck! :D

Get an app called "Tae kims guide to japanese" it's extremely helpful. It will take you through pronunciation, hiragana, katakana, conjugation, some kanji, verbs, and adjectives, and it's free.
