We need more context. In the 1900s, it was usual for hotels, trains, and steamship lines to put decorative stickers on luggage as a kind of travel souvenir. A well-traveled tourist might have a trunk covered with stickers showing all the places where the trunk had been. You might see someone carrying a suitcase like this: http://tinyurl.com/zsvw3dx and envy them for having traveled to Mexico and Cairo and having stayed in the Excelsior Hotel and the Hotel Victoria.

Maybe it is referring to a stamp in a passport ? When someone travels to another country, the Customs officials will put an official stamp in their passport when they arrive, and another when they depart.
