Can you explain this sentence? People are dying like flies

One usually says "drop like flies" to mean that a group of people are falling behind, falling because fatigue, or outright dying in great number. "People are dying like flies" sounds like a take on that analogy to make it even more literal. It basically means "people are dying in great number".
