Should I use What or Why in the sentence "______ do you need a boat for?" 1) WHAT do you need a boat for? 2) WHY do you need a boat for? *Which one should I use? In my language (portuguese) it is okay to use What or why. as to English I'm not so sure if I can use both.

In English, The first phrase is completely proper. For the second, you should drop "for", so instead you'd say "Why do you need a boat?" They both ask the same question and they're both correct this way.
