I think #3 would be better as "to form": "Sonar bounces sound waves off objects to form a picture of the objects..."
If you wanted to use "forming", I think a comma needs to be added: "Sonar bounces sound waves off objects, forming a picture of the objects by collecting echoes."

I think you've got the right answers however there seem to be some words missing in the text:
The sonar showed what seemed [TO BE or LIKE] large (5 move) objects underwater.
