"I don't much care for it" means, "It is not important for me. I'm not worried about it. I'm not interested in it".

It depends on the context and your attitude to the situation.

I suppose it should be: I don't care much for that.
And I think it means: I am not really interested in that.
In some sense it is similar to your meaning.
