What does this word refer to? One of the questions in my TOEFL test was asking what the word "they" refers to in this sentence: "We now have ample evidence that the desirability of events affects adaptational outcomes more than the amount of change that they require." I'm not sure if it refers to the events or the outcomes because both of them seem reasonable.....
