What is the difference between "dich" and "dir"/"mich" and "mir"?

"Mir" and "dir" are the dative pronouns for 1st and 2nd person singular, "mich" and "dich" the accusative ones.

Just curious, my German teacher told us as beginners that we should think of "mir" as "to me" and "dir" as "to you", is this a good way to remember it?
