How can I ask a taxi driver if they're ok to take me to somewhere?
The situation is that I take a taxi on a road or just found a taxi driver around a shop and want to ask them to take me to ...some place... How should I ask hem if they can do it and don't have other clients right now?
When I asked a taxi driver last time "are you free?" they looked at me like I'm nuts... so what's the proper way to ask that?

I would say that your sentence was fine to start the request.
However, I would probably add the destination too.
For example:
Are you free to take me to the airport?
or
Can you please take me to the airport?
or
Could you please take me to the airport?
You could also ask the taxi driver if (s)he is available or currently on another job, but usually it's enough to ask one of the questions above.
Your sentence was fine and definitely shouldn't cause any surprise.
