Hola Esteban, nosotros llamamos colonias a zonas con casas. Podría decirse que es un sinónimo de vecindario (neighborhood) o barrio. Saludos.

I think Carlos is correct. I lived in Mexico, never really heard them say that, but I think there are parts of a city it will say Colonia this or that. Lot of times they say "Zona," too.

It means the neighborhood or area.
