What is the difference between "der Gruß" and "die Begrüßung"?

Gruss is something formal. You finish a letter typically with:
"mit freundlichen Gruessen" which means "regards"
Begruessung is more of an activity upon actual meeting, like saying "hello" to someone into the face.
