What is the difference between "aufwachen", "wecken", and "aufwecken"?

aufwachen = get back from sleep to conciousness
aufwecken and wecken = wake somebody up who is sleeping

aufwachen is intransitive: someone is waking up (no object is required)
aufwecken/wecken is transitive: someone wakes another person up (who is sleeping)
