Imagine yourself stretching your arms and legs out to after sitting on a cramped seat for a long time. That is the action for "stretch out".

It means to lay down.
Example:
I arrived at my mom's house, and while she was cooking dinner, I stretched out on the sofa and watched some television. She told me that I should stop being lazy and come help her peel some potatoes.
