This is a common expression which means that you should be careful before taking action. Literally, it means that before you jump (leap), you should make sure there is a safe place to land.

Hi Carrie, This is a proverb which advises someone to consider the dangers or unknowns before you commit yourself to doing something. The word "leap" means to seize an opportunity to do something Example: You have to look before you leap and take over the post as Director of the company. Hope this helps. Cheers, Lance
