what is the difference between to borrow and to lend ?

1. Jane lent her book to him (Jane gave him her book to use. Jane still owns the book.) <-- Kind of a "giving" action.
2. He borrowed Jane's book. (He asked Jane if he could use her book for a period of time and she said yes. Jane still owns the book.) <-- Kind of a "taking/receiving" action.

If I need something, 'I borrow it'.
If someone else needs something, 'I lend it' to them.
Example. My friend needs a car.
She says to me: 'Can I borrow your car?'
I say to her: 'yes. I'll lend it to you.

Those two words are the two sides of the same transaction. Only the point of view changes: Someone needing money (to buy a car for example) borrows that money from a bank. That person is called a "borrower". Conversely, the bank lends money to borrowers. The bank is called the "lender".
