Is the boy prodding cattle (sheep maybe?)? I think a crook is some kind of kane or a long stick shepherds use.

A crook is a long staff with a round hook at the end. You'll see pictures if you look for "shepherd's crook".
"To prod (something)" means you push something with a long blunt object, such as a crook, a stick, or even your finger.
