What is the difference between "小孩" and "孩子"?

The differece is subtle. They both have the meaning of young boys and girls.But "小孩" is specially used to call the children under the age of 12. Besides, we say"男孩子(boy)" and "女孩子(girl)" instead of "男小孩" or "女小孩".

Generally speaking, 小孩 is neutral and 孩子 is more affective.

“小孩”means child ,相对成年人来说,低于18岁;“孩子”除了有小孩的意思,还有相对于父母讲的,即使再大,也是父母的孩子。

“小孩”中的“孩”就是“孩子”的意思,再加上“小”,就是指年纪比较小的孩子。而孩子是相对于成年人来说的,尚未成年的人,就是孩子。
