Interesting question, I've been using both all my life and never thought about it. I suggest you only attempt to use 'while' until you are completely fluent in English you are unlikely to make mistakes and it will be less embarrassing for you. 'Wait for me here I'll only be a while' - (whilst cannot be used here) I tend to use 'whilst' when formulating an argument 'Whilst I understand your point, I don't believe it to be true.' I hope this helps, by the way I think this only applies to English and not it's international variants.
