Past tenses exercise I Tell me if I used correct tenses (verbs weren't given, I had to come up with them myself so they can be wrong): a) When I bumped into Patricia, she( had just started ) attending self-defence course. b) My sister and I (were growing up) in a small rural village in Sussex, England. c) I’m afraid I can’t trust him anymore. It was the second time (he had lied to me) about his work d) I took up reading to pass the time while I (was recovering) from shoulder surgery. e) By March 2010, we (had been running our company) for more than a decade. f) Considering his criminal record, (he got) a very lenient sentence, don’t you think? g) As (it was getting dark), they had no choice but to take a taxi to the airport. h) when we were teenagers, my twin brother (accused me) of taking like too seriously. i) Robert’s parents were summoned to school to receive a warning after he (had skipped 20 classes) in a row.

Hello Nayoon, They are all correct except number 2 where I think it may be better to use the past simple - 'My sister and I grew up ...' however in different contexts different possibilities exist. Your choices of verb seem reasonable. Best wishes Bob
