--First, get into the habit of writing. write write write. don't be afraid of writing.
--Break up the large task into smaller parts.
--Do not procrastinate.
--Read a lot so you can see other people's writing styles and get ideas for your writing topics.
--Try to find On Writing Well by William K. Zinsser. My students didn't complain about it, so it must be good :)

I would say three of the most important things are good structure, good grammar, and variety of vocabulary. Make sure that your essay has an introductory paragraph and a conclusion. Make sure each paragraph has a topic sentence. Use transition words between paragraphs. As for good grammar...well that's self-explanatory. We say "variety is the spice of life" so don't use the same words over and over.
