«bok» or «bøk»?
I'm self-taught in learning Norwegian, and the app Duolingo (which I use) used «bøk» initially for the word "book". I assumed that was the way to write it until I saw them sometimes using «bok». However, I continued using «bøk» for my answers and it never counted it wrong, but one time I tried using «bok» and it counted it wrong. So I was wondering if it's 1) a bug in the app, 2) you can use either one, or 3) it depends on the situation. As far as I can tell, it's random.

Something definitely sounds a bit off there. The vowel does shift when you move from singular to plural, but not sure why DuoLingo is behaving in the way you described unless there was something else wrong with the answer you gave.
a book - ei/en bok
the book - boka/boken
two books - to bøker
the books - bøkene
