Is the following use of "program" correct as a verb? Hi there, please let me know if I correctly use the verb " program " in the following sentence. If yes, does the whole meaning of the sentence sound natural? Violent videos should be programming on TV after 10 PM when children are not in the audience. Finally, can I use " broadcasting" instead of "programming" in the sentence above? Thank you.

No. It requires an object to be programmed and a person or subject to perform the action. "The television producers spent all day programming their fall line up." (The producers are the ones doing the programming and the object they're programming is the fall line up) I am programming the conference schedule for next week. Broadcasting doesn't work either with the "ing," which give the sense of it already happening at the moment. Violent videos should only be broadcast after 10 PM when children are sleeping. Adding "only" gives the sense that you're sharing a strong opinion and gives it a more natural flow to the idea that is being expressed. Or at least what I think you're trying to express. Broadcast works here if you drop the "ing."

In U.S. English, you can say "Violent videos on broadcast TV should be programmed after 10 PM..." You need to say "programmed," not "programming." "To program" and "to broadcast" mean different things. "To program" a show means "to schedule" it--to give it a date and time on a schedule. Suppose you are television executive in a meeting. You are deciding what times to schedule various shows. In the meeting, you might "program" a show for 11 pm, November 22nd. The program will be broadcast at 11 pm, November 22nd.

Hello! Broadcasting is a better choice for the sentence. Programming is used more for computers or other technologies: I programmed the remote control. You could say: violent television programs should be on television after 10 pm. Hope this helps!
