what is the difference between meet people and make a friends?

You can meet someone you already know ("meet me at the station"), but meet is also used for new people that you are not close with. Making friends is used when you become closer to someone. example: "I met him two years ago, but we became friends last week". You can make friends with someone new, which means you met them and then quickly became friends.
