Here's a quick question for today.
As a native speaker, do 否则 and 要不然 mean the same to you?
If so, do you use one more than the other?

否则 is the formal of the two. It comes from Classical Chinese.

否则，意味着如果不，就会发生下一步，比较强硬危急和威慑人心。
要不然，是说如果不，就会这样，既有选择比较，又有预先警告的意愿，是兼具比较，选择，让步和威胁的复杂感情表示，因情况而定，外国学习者容易掌握，很难出错。
但是，如果随意用否则，将会让中国人马上紧张。
