Well, the awful internet connecting situation is attributed to the GFW(the Great Firewall) which is built for political reasons by our government... We really dislike it either. It blocks all information and stop us from interacting with the outside world. Foreign software, apps or websites are usually affected or even unavailable. If you do need to communicate with someone in China, you may want to try some Chinese software, such as wechat(微信) or QQ. But the effect can never be guaranteed as long as it is transnational.

Maybe you can try Wechat or QQ. It's more stable. I often use the Wechat to contact with foreigners.
