Kant, the philosopher, would have made a good poet.
I take this sentence to mean "We know for a fact that Kant was not a good poet".
Right?

The writer thinks that if Kant had tried to write poetry, he would have been a good poet. His poems would have been good.

I don't think your sentence makes sense. I would say "Kant, the philosopher, could have been a good poet."
