Manchester United won/had won at half time, but they lost the match 3-2? In the first part of the sentence should we use past perfect because first they had won at half time before losing in the second part of the match? or it stays in past simple cause we know exactly when they won - at half time? Or maybe both are fine? thanks!

We will use the past continuous (or past progressive) tense in this situation. Because at half time the match is still happening and therefore is not a completed action. The correct form is: Manchester United were winning at halftime, but they lost the match 3-2.

What about "were winning"? - seems to fit better

"Manchester United was* winning at half time" *In the US, we would tend to use the singular verb with that particular team name. I believe that in the UK, they use the plural. Since you're talking about a British soccer team, you may want to say "Manchester United were winning."
