What is the difference between "cluster" and "strand"?

A strand is just one piece of something like thread or hair. So "a strand of hair" would mean one single section of it. If you wanted to say more than one you could say a "section of hair". You wouldn't use cluster.
A cluster is a group of things or people so "a group of people clustered around the fire".
