Do you often use thies word in everyday English? When?
"I looked again at the cylinder, and ungovernable terror gripped me. I stood petrified and staring.
A big greyish rounded bulk, the size, perhaps, of a bear, was rising slowly and painfully out of the cylinder. As it bulged up and caught the light, it glistened like wet leather." (by H.G. Wells)

You could just say 'shape' instead.
'Bulk' refers to the large size of something, but in everyday modern English we don't often use this word in the way that HG Wells used it. "The War of the Worlds" was written over a 120 years ago, and the language has changed since then.
