The origin of the word 消息 This is not really a serious question, I'm simply intrigued. Is there a reason why "news" or "information" is called 消息 in Chinese? If we take the literal meaning of each component, we get something like... (消) "cause to disappear" and (息) "breath". So something that makes your breath disappear. I guess it makes sense haha. When you hear good or bad news, it sometimes takes your breath away. No way :O!

It probably could be traced back to 易經:...天地盈虛,與時消息... This is interesting, I found an online dictionary and both words' original meanings: 消:originally indicates the situation that a river becomes a stream, then it has developed other meanings, like "digest", "eliminate" 息:like what you've already known, means "breath", also "rest", "growing", like 修養生息 I guess it means how things "grow with time", like moon, plants, etc. Then it is also a noun now

Hello! It's my first time use italki. I'm glad that I can answer your question. First, the word "消息" first appeared in the Book of changes. The mean of the word "消" is death or disappear. The mean of the word "息" is growing or appear. The word"消息" is the objective world's occurrence, development and outcome. It includes objective law of the world. As time goes on,Gradually "消息" become a kind of fixed news content. So "消息" also called"news"
