What is the difference between "auswählen" & "wählen" ?

wählen: a political party, a choice you make in general, dial a number
auswählen: a particular choice you make. You explicitly choose that item out of others.
If your German is quite good, <duden.de> is quite useful for these things. It is the standard book for German words. But it is all German.
