The modern slang term "shotgun" actually originates from when a person would ride beside the driver of a horse and carriage and have their shotgun ready to get rid of bandits.
In modern times, it is now used when someone wants to sit in the front passenger seat of a car. That person will say "shotgun!" and whoever says it first amongst the passengers gets to sit in the front beside the driver.
"to call shotgun" means I want to sit in the front seat. Yes, "I wanna sit beside the driver" would also be a good translation.
Shotgun can also be used in the verb "to ride shotgun"
Jane yelled "shotgun" first and therefore she got to sit in the front passenger seat.
Jane called shotgun and got to sit in the front seat.
Everyone wants to call shotgun first because they want to sit in the front seat.
Jane has called shotgun every single day.
Jane was really excited because she loves riding shotgun.
Jane was happy all day because she got to ride shotgun.
Jane rode shotgun today.
Jane has ridden shotgun before.
Hope this helps!

Hey!
"I call shotgun" is usually what one person would say with a group friends typically when you want the front seat. You usually only say it to friends or informally to people you're close with.

Yes it means you want to sit in the front seat beside the driver. It comes from the old west days in the United States when the method of travel was via stage coach. The driver sat on top with the horses' reins, and the other person would sit next to the driver and carry a shotgun to protect the stage coach and the passengers who rode inside.

The rules of shotgun are very simple and very clear. The first person to shout "shotgun" when you're within the sight of the car gets the front seat. That's how the game's played. There are no exceptions for someone with a concussion.
