Well, but what question are those lists answering? Are those just iigures of native speakers, their first language? For instance if you consider the number of eastern european countries where german is a common second language, the nuber of german speakers is much higher. Or for insance asian countries where french language has remained since colonial days. I would expect to see french much higher on how many people in hte world understand it at least as a second language.

Here is another Top 20 list (from number 6 on the list seems to depend strongly on the underlying statistics):
Mandarin
Hindi
Spanish
English
Arabic
Portuguese
Bengali
Russian
Japanese
German
Punjabi
French
Wu Sino-Tibetan
Javanese
Telugu
Marathi
Vietnamese
Korean
Tamil
Italian
For boarder-crossing communication, of course, the number of native speakers is not that much relevant. Sorted by decreasing number of non-native speakers, the sequence would of course start with English.
