How to translate the phrase "Aika velikultia" from Tuntematon Sotilas?

In English it would be something like "quite the (little) rascals". Interestingly, very different translations seems to have been made for this same quote:
De såta stallbröderna. (Sweden),
Es waren schon rechte Narren, alle miteinander. (West Germany),
Die alten Kampanine. (DDR),
They were good men. (englanti)
You'll note that the official English translation seems like a dud, in that it's quite serious in comparison to the original.
