What is the difference between "mezzo" e "mezza" while saying the hour in italian...

Currently, I am studying Italian to certify in A2 level however I have doubts about how to say the hour. I have read in books that "Sono le otto e mezzo" and "sono le otto e mezza". I know Italian has gender declension but what is the correct to use of "mezzo" and "mezza".

But "mezza" it's more common.

Yo he dicho siempre "sono le 2/3/4/5... e mezza". Ahora he buscado en Internet y he visto que es mejor decir "sono le 2/3/4/5... e mezzo". Pero se puede decir en ambos modos. Suelo decir "otto e mezzo" cuando me refiero a la nota que he tomado en una prueba.
