Okay so they use the preposition por (by, through, for) + Definite article (the) which becomes the following:
por + a = pela
por + o = pelo
por + os = pelos
por + as = pelas
Some examples:
Eu passei pela mesma situação que você (I’ve been through the same situation as you)
Sempre ando pelas mesmas ruas para ir ao trabalho (I always walk through the same streets to get to work)
Hope that helps bro. Continua treinando ai, boa sorte.

It seems obvious to a native speaker but not to a learner:
The genre of the preposition must be the same to the noun that it refers to.
"Ontem caminhei pelo bairro Liberdade". Bairro is a masculine noun
"Ontem caminhei pelas ruas de São Paulo". Ruas is a feminine noun
