What is the meaning of ''make a living out of his poetry'' in this sentence?
''...He could not, however, make a living out of his poetry, as previous poets had done, but had to work as a farm labourer and teacher from time to time.''

It Just means he couldn`t survive financially on just the money he made writing poetry and had to do other work too. In this case it was farm labor and teaching.
