Concerning kanji, are the characters simplified like how Standard Chinese is today?
Do they still retain their Traditional Chinese look?

They’re sort of in between. For the most part they’re more like traditional characters, but some are the same as modern simplified Chinese, and some are simplified but in a different from simplified Chinese. Some are also unique Japanese inventions.
