overtures like that In the movie "Leon The Professional", a group of corrupt DEA agents paid Matilda's father to stash cocaine in his apartment, but then they discovered that some of the cocaine was missing. Their leader, Norman Stansfield, chose to give the father time until tomorrow noon to find out who it was. Once his time was up, DEA agents decided to storm the apartment where Matilda's family lived. In the middle of killing the family, Stansfield pauses, to discuss classical music with the father: We said noon - I've got one minute past. You don't like Beethoven. You don't know what you're missing: overtures like that get my juices flowing. So powerful. But after his openings, to be honest, he does tend to get a little f******g boring. That's why I stopped! Could you please explain to me the "overtures like that" part? What exactly does the "that" refer to? Would there be any difference between "overtures like that" and "overtures like his (Beethoven's)" in the given context? Thank you!

An overture is the piece of music played at the beginning of an opera. Yes, you may say either overtures like that or overtures like his.

Yes, you are right. 'that' in that context ;) means 'his' or 'Beethoven's'. We use 'that' to refer to something that has just been discussed.
