I have never been in San Diego. If you haven't already done so, I would recommend you do the following. Do an internet search for places close to where you will stay., Look for museums, art galleries, coffee shops, music sales places, etc, where you might find people who have the time and interest to talk. There could be other cultural places of interest to you. Maybe even look for places with Japanese names, although they will probably be in English.
