The different between 'next' and 'the next'?

Can you try to make a sentence? There are many possibilities so it's difficult to know what kind of situation it is.

Here's one example to show a subtle difference. While both "next" and "the next" can be used, I chose to use "the next" to place slightly more emphasis that I had to work the next day.
"Last friday I drank a lot, even though the next day I had to work."
