What is a 'medium pattern' of the depth charge?
‘Stand by for medium pattern.’
‘Aye aye, sir.’
Nourse spoke into his mouthpiece. Krause gulped with excitement. The moment might be very close. It was always true of handling ships at sea that time seemed to move faster and faster as the crisis approached. Two minutes ago action seemed far off. Question: What is a 'medium pattern'? Does that mean the depth of the pattern? If so, how deep will the depth charge explode in this pattern?

That terminology would be set by the military dropping the depth charges. Could vary widely by vessel or country of service. It would be used against shallow pattern or deep pattern. For instance... shallow explodes at 50 meters, medium at 100 meters or deep at 200 meters deep...
