We use the definite article "il" before masculine singular words beginning with a consonant.
We use the definite article "lo" before masculine singular words beginning with s + consonant (st, sp, sc), gn, ps, pn, z.
Examples with "il": il treno, il divano, il tavolo, il bicchiere, il muro etc.
Examples with "lo": lo stato, lo struzzo, lo spazio, lo scivolo, lo gnomo, lo psicologo, lo pneumatico, lo zaino etc.
